BitMine Stock Plummets 9% as $7 Billion Ethereum “Hole” Spooks Investors

The sell-off in BitMine Immersion Technologies ($BMNR) intensified today as the stock dropped 8.6% to reach $18.56, extending a brutal monthly slide that has wiped out nearly 30% of its value. While the broader market is feeling the heat, BitMine is taking a harder hit because of its massive bet on Ethereum (ETH-USD). The company has essentially tethered its entire future to the price of Ether, and as the token struggles to find support, the stock is showing just how volatile that strategy can be.

Ethereum Losses Pressure the Balance Sheet

A major reason for the crash is the widening gap between what BitMine paid for its crypto and what it is worth today. The company currently holds over 4.28 million ETH, which accounts for roughly 3.55% of the entire global supply. However, with Ethereum prices falling toward $2,100, the “hole” in BitMine’s treasury is nearing $7 billion. This creates a massive accounting “hole” in the balance sheet, as the company’s average purchase price sits way up between $3,800 and $3,900.

This has made institutional investors nervous, despite Chairman Tom Lee recently describing these paper losses as being “by design” during this accumulation phase.

Internal Turmoil at BitMine Fuels Investor Panic

Beyond the crypto price action, internal company moves are adding to the downward pressure. The market is still digesting the sudden termination of President Erik Nelson in late January, which left a leadership hole right as the company prepares for its biggest project yet.

Additionally, shareholders recently approved a move to increase authorized common shares from 500 million to a staggering 50 billion. This massive jump in share capacity has fueled fears of extreme dilution, as the company may need to issue more stock to keep its “Alchemy of 5%” buying spree going while ETH prices are low.

Staking Hopes Offer a Potential Path Forward

Despite the carnage, there is still a small group of high-profile bulls who see this as a buying opportunity. Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest recently added more BMNR to its portfolio, betting that the upcoming launch of the Made in America Validator Network (MAVAN) will turn things around. The company hopes to go live with this staking infrastructure in the first quarter of 2026, which would allow them to earn over $370 million in annual rewards.

For now, however, the Ethereum treasury model is acting as a heavy weight on the stock. It’s proving that when the crypto market gets shaky, BitMine is often the first to feel the impact.
