Goldman Sachs CEO Makes a Surprising Disclosure that He Holds Bitcoin, but Is ‘Still Trying to Figure Out How Bitcoin Behaves’

XRP (XRP-USD), Bitcoin (BTC-USD), and Ethereum (ETH-USD) are increasingly becoming staples in the portfolios of the world’s most powerful financial leaders. During a recent appearance at the World Liberty Forum in Palm Beach, Goldman Sachs ($GS) CEO David Solomon made a surprising personal disclosure. Despite years of skepticism, he admitted that he now holds a small amount of the digital asset. Solomon used the appearance to clarify his stance, stating: “I’m still trying to figure out how Bitcoin behaves. I own a little bitcoin, very little.” This rare admission suggests that while the bank remains cautious, its leadership is no longer ignoring the influence of the crypto market.

Regulatory Filings Give a $2.36 Billion Reality Check

While Solomon’s personal stash is small, his firm’s institutional footprint is massive. According to the bank’s latest fourth-quarter 2025 Form 13F filing, Goldman Sachs now manages approximately $2.36 billion in crypto-linked ETF holdings. This portfolio isn’t just limited to Bitcoin; it shows a diversified strategy that includes $1 billion in Ethereum, $153 million in XRP and $108 million in Solana (SOL-USD). Even with recent market volatility causing the value of these stakes to fluctuate, the sheer size of the allocation proves that Goldman is deeply embedded in the digital asset space.

Blockchain Exploration Drives Internal Innovation

Goldman Sachs is also rebuilding its own financial tools using blockchain technology. Solomon highlighted that a significant number of the firm’s employees are currently working on tokenization and stablecoins. The bank is exploring how these digital tools can make traditional businesses, like settlement and custody, faster and more transparent. Rather than chasing every new crypto trend, Solomon explained that Goldman aims to integrate these technologies where they actually improve the bank’s core operations and save costs for clients.

Legal Clarity Gives the Market a New Path Forward

The shift in Goldman’s attitude is largely being driven by changes in Washington. Solomon pointed to ongoing discussions around the CLARITY Act, a piece of legislation designed to create a clear national framework for digital assets. Utilizing a rules-based system is essential for the bank to feel comfortable expanding its services. Solomon suggested that as regulators provide more freedom for companies to get involved, Goldman may revisit its level of participation. This means big banks are still holding back their money, waiting for the government to give them a clear “okay” to go all-in.
