Mizuho Slashes PayPal (PYPL) Stock Price, Cites Musk’s X Money as Serious Threat

Mizuho Financial Group ($MZHOF) has reportedly downgraded PayPal ($PYPL) from Outperform to Neutral and cut down its price target by $10. The move reflects growing pressure and uncertainty in PYPL’s outlook as competition intensifies across payment systems.

Analysts at Mizuho have pointed to X Money, Elon Musk’s upcoming payments platform, as a key challenge to PayPal’s core business. The service is expected to combine payments, wallets, and commerce inside the X social media app.

Mizuho Downgrade Reflects Rising Competitive Pressure

Mizuho’s reduced PayPal rating follows a major decrease in its initial price target from $60 to $50. This marks a more than 16% decline and reflects downside potential, given that PYPL is currently trading at roughly $50.

The bearish outlook comes as analysts also lower their expectations for PayPal’s Venmo integration and branded checkout growth. Mizuho said that X Money targets the same P2P payments and digital wallet space as PayPal, adding pressure on the payment company’s revenue base and outlook.

Analysts at other firms have also turned increasingly cautious on PYPL. Citi ($C) and Wells Fargo ($WFC) maintain Hold ratings, reflecting slower growth expectations amid market share pressure and legal uncertainties.

X Money Emerges as Direct Threat to PayPal

Musk has announced that X Money will likely launch this April. The platform is being built as the financial layer of Musk’s “everything app.” It will reportedly combine payments, wallets, and commerce into a single system, with potential future crypto integration. The structure is expected to mirror models like WeChat Pay and Alipay, making it a direct competitor to PayPal.

Notably, X has more than 400 million monthly users, giving X Money a strong base for growth once it becomes widely adopted. The platform will introduce cashtags, allowing users to track stocks and crypto directly within the platform. There are also talks of a potential partnership with major payment networks such as Visa ($V).

Reports also reveal that X Money may offer up to 6% yield on user balances, though this has not been officially confirmed. It has also been suggested that the upcoming CLARITY Act in the U.S. could influence how crypto-related or yield-bearing financial products are structured, particularly from non-bank platforms. If the rules are introduced, they could affect X Money’s features and parts of the broader stablecoin market, including PayPal’s PYUSD.
